Drive and Commitment

I'm fully committed
to my Nature-Culture project. That means
I have let go of caution and am involving myself wholeheartedly (brain, body, and soul) to the service of this project that I love. I'm taking a vacation from my usual way of being, and stretching my whole self beyond the way I’ve always done things.

I am also engaging hyper-drive; I am manifesting my courage, harnessing the power of productive obsession, and engaging slow passion, a kind of simmering energy that keeps me focused on my priorities.

Agenda:
1. Read "The Art of Simple Living"
2. Love cycle
3. Four days of passionate flow

1. Read "The Art of Simple Living":
I'm re-beginning this little book by Shunmyo Masuno (2019), subtitled "100 Daily Practices from a Zen Buddhist Monk for a Lifetime of Calm and Joy". It's a compilation of many small habits we can adopt to bring us to inner peace, and feel less stressed.

#6: Organize your desktop; it reflects your inner mind. In general we "polish our minds through the act of cleaning. ... The key to keeping your mind invigorated is to first put the things around you in order."

#7: Make a delicious cup of coffee. Any time we use a slow, ceremonial process- the flip side of convenience - we bring more pleasure to our life. Life requires time and effort, and taking the time to do something with attention brings joy.

#8: Put pen to paper with care. Use writing or drawing to connect and express your true self. Let go of distractions and let the brush move, and mindfully face your inner self.

2. Love cycle:
Years ago I wrote this month-long meditation on love, with a daily reading and work. Day 14 is Live in Mindfulness.

The secret to living in mindfulness is knowing that I hover always on the edge of brilliance. That awareness leads to living each moment with urgency and excitement, which leads in turn to greater clarity, openness, and joy. Being is my primary experience - this simple fact of being, along with a feeling of love, defines my experience of life.

As much as possible, I keep my awareness in the moment - here and now. When I am present centered and mindful rather than in my head (comparing, judging, planning, hoping) time slows down. I am grounded. Living becomes more interesting. I feel my feet as they touch the floor. I notice the sounds, the details, and the nuances. I notice this moment as unique- not part of a pattern, and I feel the inherent joy of being alive.

When I am mindful, each moment of my life becomes a step on my spiritual path, and every part of my daily routine is fuel for spiritual growth. When things happen to me, I know myself as the one having the experience, separate from the experience. I ask myself “What is my Truth? What is my wisest response?” I am like a child, collected in my center, safe, calm, and at peace.

“If someone comes along and shoots an arrow into your heart, it’s fruitless to stand there and yell at the person. It would be much better to turn your attention to the fact that there’s an arrow in your heart...” ~Pema Chödrön

3. Four days of passionate flow:
The next four days (Friday through Monday) are the best block of time I have to obsess. On Fridays I make a plan for Nature-Culture flow and writing through the next week. My Nature-Culture theme this month is winter regeneration and awareness. Today I am brainstorming the next topics in my Winter chapters, and also some garden, advocacy, and community tasks to support that work:
  • Create a printed copy of my book to share and an online version with a QR code.
  • Sat: Write Sanctuary: Support urban wildlife in winter + Prepare for seed starting.
  • Bird and animal care plans and schedule. How to care for squirrels with less mess?
  • Get new seeds.
  • Early seed starting plans. Set up new grow lights. Clean pots.
  • Sun: Write Give Back: Advocate for clean air and a safe climateA simple community climate awareness ceremony
  • Collect Superfund story info to share- host an online writing workshop? How to sign a petition, write testimony, and sign up to attend (anyone want to go with me??); Also who to contact in state legislature.
  • Make creative postcards?
  • Mon: Write Awareness: Celebrate Imbalc
  • Host our Imbalc fire, with a theme of saying good-bye to all the evils of the world.
  • Write next Earth Action News
  • Read season books, make paper snowflakes, look for signs of spring, and sew hand warmers
  • Update Interfaith Earthkeepers calendar. Add my two events; Send a reminder to the email list to send events and share their Light with others.
