Islamic years are calculated from that day, called 1 Muharram, 622 CE. They are followed by the suffix AH, which stands for "After Hijra". Tonight begins 1443 AH.
Agenda:
1. Journal queries
2. Prayer
1. Journal queries:
Because hijra means moving from a bad state of affairs to a good one, many Muslims use this time to reflect on their own migrations, actual or of the soul, and think about resolutions for the New Year.
Today I consider:
If I am on the path to a new life-
What resources do I need for the journey?
How can I better enjoy the journey?
What is my destination, and how will I know when I have arrived?
2. Prayer:
Al-Hijra is celebrated quietly, with prayers, readings, and reflection, not the hoopla we associate with the western New Year. Muslims tell the story of Muhammad’s flight through the desert on camel-back with sword-wielding thugs in pursuit, and say prayers.
Rabbi zidni ilma.
(Rah-bee-zid-nee-yi-ma)
3. Depth walking meditation:O Lord, increase my knowledge.
I will practice this walking meditation on my morning dog walk, as I focus on depth and my life path.
1. Savor life: Name out everything that is wonderful about this day and this moment. Continue this for 1-2 blocks.
2. Persistence: Turn a corner, and bring attention to my path. Where is it leading me today? What are my top priorities and how can I meet them with determination? Continue this for 1-2 blocks.
2. Service: Turn a corner, and focus on my tender heart. Send loving thoughts to my neighbors, my family, my community, the world, and plan how I will serve them today. Continue this for 1-2 blocks.
4. Purpose: Turn the last corner, and speak a prayer out loud - “Spirit of the Universe, Give me Light to fulfill my purpose right now: to love and serve my family, my community, and the Earth, lead a simple life of integrity, and be a creative force. ”
I am going out soon to look at this moon! How exciting. Also this sounds like a much much better new year's celebration than we have.
