Blue Moon Sabbath

Sunday is my day
to be quiet (at least for a while), with the spirit, in contemplation and prayer, and in community with nature and/or other bipeds. This Sabbath is unusual because II'm not alone in the house - and I need a plan for how to be quiet with a partner: Well, I'll start off with my usual quiet morning writing time, and flow directly into Meeting for Worship. Then scoot outside for time alone in the garden. After that, quiet will be an inner feeling I carry with me!

Today is also the full moon called the Blue Moon, because it is the second full moon in May. Actually, the original definition of a blue moon is a fourth full moon in one season, but I'm going with the newer definition - the second full moon in a month - because I don't have any better name for this moon. Both are correct, because it's folklore, and folklore is fluid!

Agenda:
1. Read "12 Tiny Things"
2. Review, refine, and shift
3. Balance journal
4. Celebrate balance
5. Truth walk ceremony

May First Quarter Moon

Tonight is the First Quarter Moon; we are one-quarter of the way through the moon cycle. The moon is waxing - getting larger - until it's full again. Now is the time to remain flexible, use my obstacles as fuel for growth, and show full effort for priorities.

I use this May quarter moon's energy to create strength. I will remember to exercise, eat well, rest, and get healthy, and also, keep up my mental strength for the things that matter.

Agenda:
1. Read "That Clear and Certain Sound":
2. Journal queries
3. Make a full effort plan
4. Writing themes and passion flow plan:

Full Squirrel Moon and Chung Ch'iu

The squirrels are creating great entertainment these days

Today is the start of Chung Ch’iu, the 3-day Mid-Autumn Moon Festival - a happy and beautiful Asian family celebration that comes each year at the time of the full moon in September or October.

And tonight is the full moon called the Squirrel Moon, because now the squirrels are busily gathering nuts for the winter. We are now at the peak of the strong-energy yang phase of the waxing moon, and will soon begin the quiet-energy yin time of the waning moon.

Agenda for today:
1. Take a vision walk
2. Celebrate balance
3. Read "The Sweet Spot"
4. Fall cleaning and Home projects
5. Make moon cakes
6. Make a floating lantern
7. Have a moon-viewing party

Autumn Equinox

The autumn equinox occurs this morning at 11:19 a.m. in the Pacific Northwest. Summer is over and darkness will again catch up to the light.

The rains have already begun (hallelujah!), Canadian geese are on the move south, the leaves are turning and beginning to drop, and night temperatures are cooler. Everything in nature is paring down, and moving energy to the roots and into the earth.

Mark the Start of Autumn:
1. Journal queries
2. Read "The Sweet Spot"
3. Sustainable straw collecting
4. Make a straw doll
5. Fall cleaning and gardening

International Day of Peace and New Harvest Moon

Today is the International Day of Peace, established in 1981 by a resolution of the UN General Assembly. In 2001 the date was fixed on September 21, and declared as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres says, "Around the world lives are being ripped apart, childhoods extinguished, and basic human dignity discarded, amidst the cruelty and degradations of war."

Tonight is also the new moon. The Chinese call this eighth new moon the Harvest Moon, for obvious reasons. The new moon is the start of the lunar cycle, a time of high energy and clear thinking. Historically, the new moon is when women took time to be alone; it's a time to retreat, set intentions, and initiate something new.

Peace Day Agenda:
1. Journal queries
2. Choose a month theme
3. Set intentions
4. Raise awareness
5. Make peace stones
6. Peace vigil
7. Retreat Day plans

First Quarter Moon of Early June

Tonight is the First Quarter Moon;
we are one-quarter of the way through the moon cycle. The moon is waxing - growing in light and energy, creating a time for decisive action. I use this early June quarter moon's energy to build my physical energy and discipline to consistently take creative action (and build my creative muscle through doing the reps).

Agenda Today:
1. Read "A Book That Takes It's Time"
2. Journal queries
3. Make a full effort plan

New Dragon Moon

Tonight is the new moon; the Chinese call the fifth new moon the Dragon Moon. Chinese dragons are a symbol of cosmic Chi, good fortune, and new beginnings, but the time around the Dragon Moon is strongly yang, with bright sunlight and moist heat. The Chinese consider this to be a dangerous and unhealthy season and they have customs to protect against the excessive yang energy.

I feel strong and effective when I am able to harness my yang energy to get stuff done, but I like to remember that yang's best aim is to protect yin, and yin's best function is to nurture yang; life is good when I have each in a kind of dynamic balance.

This week I will make an effort to bring a balance of restorative yin energy to my life: Slow down, rest well, drink more water, and practice ‘discipline of purpose’.

Agenda:
1. Journal queries
2. Read "5 Resets"
3. Do Less plan
4. Simplify the kitchen
5. Choose a month theme
6. Set intentions

Navratri Continues

Navratri continues tonight with the visit of Lakshmi.

The word navratri means nine nights; These nights are broken up into sets of three, and during each set we meditate on a different aspect of Shakti (the universal principle of energy and creativity, Mother Earth, and the feminine power in each of us) - first the Goddesses Durga, then Lakshmi, and then Saraswati.

Each of the three goddesses signifies a stage of the spiritual journey we all go through: Durga’s strength and energy creates an opening, Lakshmi’s success and fortune nurtures growth, and Saraswati’s wisdom and knowledge leads to enlightenment, happiness, and peace. Tonight we honor and thank the Divine Mother as Lakshmi, the Goddess of success.

Spring Equinox and Nowruz

Spring equinox
occurred this morning at 2:01 a.m. PDT. The word equinox comes from the Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night). This is a moment of balance - the sun rises exactly in the east and sets exactly in the west, and we experience twelve hours each of light and dark. From this moment on, we gain more light each day, until the summer solstice.

And Nowruz is the Persian New Year, which begins each year at the time of the spring equinox in Iran, and is celebrated for two weeks. The word Nowruz means New Day in Persian. It’s an ancient Persian belief that creation of the world took place on the first day of spring.

Agenda Today:
1. Journal queries
 2. Spring cleaning and decorating
3. Dye a few eggs
5. Make Koloocheh Cookies
6. Set up a haft sin
7. Nowruz Ceremony

Full Harvest Moon and Asian Moon Festival

The full Harvest Moon rises this evening -- obliquely, close to the horizon -- and remains big and bright for a long time, giving extra light to harvesters. This moon is called Atchiutchutin, the After-Harvest moon, by the Kalapuya of our area, because the big harvest in our area comes earlier. We are enjoying the first weeks of the rainy season, a profound time of transition for me.

We are now at the peak of the strong-energy yang phase of the waxing moon, and will soon begin the quiet-energy yin time of the waning moon.

Today is also the start of Chung Ch’iu, the 3-day Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. It's a happy and beautiful Asian family celebration that comes each year at the time of the full moon in September or October.

Balanced prana

Prana
is the Sanskrit word for life-force,
the vital energy that exists in all things. This life-giving energy connects us to the entire universe, and is the underlying force behind our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

In China it's called chi. Chi moves around the body freely when we are well, and when it is blocked or unbalanced we get ill.

It is my goal this month to analyze my prana, and practice ways to adjust.

Agenda:
1. Read "Total Chakra Energy Plan"
2. Starting with the root
3. Root chakra practice
