Fall is a great time to make art. I've defined three areas for What I Want and What I Will Do to Get it:
I want to make things with my hands to give away - useful things, things that inspire and teach, gifts and craftivism. This will be my late week focus, Thursday and Friday, and I will plan and prepare on Thursday morning.
I want to make artworks with a message - things that explore and support my Nature-Culture writing. This will be my weekend focus, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, with at least two hours in the studio, and I'll envision, explore, write, and set out supplies on Saturday morning.
And I want to make things with my grandsons - fun things, exploring basic skills, seasonal materials, and folk crafts. This will be my mid-week focus, Tuesday and Wednesday, and I will do all the prep on Monday, gathering all the supplies and making samples.
Agenda Today:
1. Read "The Creativity Book"
2. Evaluate my creativity habits
3. Craftivism plans
4. Preschool plans
5. Do the smallest thing
1. Read "the Creativity Book":

I'm on part 7, Connect, and Week 29: Demand Grandeur, which is one of the things I love about Eric Maisel! He goes right to the biggest, most flamboyant aspect of life and demands that we reach for that.
"Think about your own life. What last stirred feelings of grandeur in you?" He thinks it was probably art or poetry or film, but I would add nature - the Monarch butterfly, and the great barren prairie. "We need grandeur to survive, and as everyday creative people, it is up to us to supply it for ourselves and or others. ... we are obliged to produce grand work -- work that really moves us."
2. Evaluate my creativity habits:
Once a week I try to take stock of my creative habits:
Have I launched into a large creative project, one worth exhausting myself on, and if not, why?Have I constructed a schedule for my creative work and am I keeping to it?
Do I set goals at the beginning of each week?
Do I have a daily routine that supports my creative efforts?
Journal: Yes, I like my new plan of action and schedule. it's working so far. I made it to the studio 2 days last week.
3. Craftivism plans:
One of my goals this fall is to make things with my hands to give away - useful things, things that inspire and teach, gifts and craftivism. This is my late week focus, Thursday and Friday, and I will plan and prepare on Thursday mornings. This week my plan is to begin to design a fish tag, that has a fish stamp on one side and advise on clean water on the other. This is a long-term project so I hope to get a start today.
4. Preschool plans:
This week the focus was on the moon, and we did some coloring and read a book. We made this cool floating lantern (but I did most of the work because it was not suited to a pre-school project).
Next week is pumpkin week! We will go to the pumpkin patch on Saturday, and then cut jack-o-lanterns on Tuesday. Also, coloring pages, pumpkin paintings, jack-o-lantern cookies? and something with pumpkin seeds.
5. Do the smallest thing:
Doing the smallest thing is a great way to make courageous creative work less frightening; also finding the "minimum effective dose", the amount of work that keeps me challenged and joyful, and if I keep at it will get me to the finish line on time.
Today I will list specific goals for each day's creative projects and identify the first step; also itemize the supplies and preparation steps on a separate check list.
My creative projects plan this week:
- Thursday: Make moon cakes
- Friday: Draw a fish to make into a stamp
- Saturday: Paint on the Moon Landscape
- Sunday: Paint on the Moon Landscape
- Monday: Paint butterflies in the bathroom
- Tuesday: Cut jack-o-lanterns
- Wednesday: Make pumpkin paintings, cookies?
Preparations:
- Th: Get bean paste
- F: Find a trout photo, collect rubber stamp
- Sat: Collect pumpkins
- S: Write about Moon Landscape idea
- M: Find new butterfly photos, paints / Mix orange paint, find black paper
- T: Prep knives and bowl, newspapers?
- W: Set up for cookies
